New Year New Job
Are you already planning on seeking a new job in 2019?
If it’s been a while since you interviewed you may need to review a few things. Whether you are a pro or a noob (gaming slang) at interviewing I think one of the most important things is self-awareness. (Before I continue… having boys of gaming age, I am unfortunately becoming aware of terminology most of which I dislike but noob I think could go far. It means someone who is inexperienced at something (FYI…) I was trying to work out how many interviews I have conducted over the years this morning and I think it is probably about 7000 give or take… and I have enjoyed every one…ish.
Could just be me but I love: candidates who stand up when greeting, who have a hard copy of their CV (shows they are organised and prepared), who have made an effort in attire, who are respectful and gracious.
I don’t like: those who bring a Starbucks (for them-self), who lean back in their chair and look around the room instead of focusing, who are dismissive when answering a question i.e. unwilling to elaborate on an answer e.g. monosyllabic, scruffiness.
I think the best interviewees for me are those that have good self-awareness, those that have questions prepared that they want to ask about the job or the company’s culture so that they find out if their values are aligned with the company’s. It goes without saying that you should always do your prep for an interview in terms of knowing the company you are applying for, its history, product and the job detail etc but if you are pitched against four others who have also done their prep you need to stand out.
This is where your personality needs to shine through, being confident and engaging but not talking over the interviewer or being arrogant. However many grade As or impressive names you have on your CV, if you are arrogant at interview it may cost you the job. It comes back to self- awareness. You need to be able to get across your points in a genuine and interesting way. Think what you can bring to the table for this company in this role.
