Time to Spring Clean your Career!
Here we are already well into 2018, full of optimism and anticipation at what this year will bring. Christmas was great, January was cold and a tad miserable and now it’s glorious February (well the sun is shining as I write this) with new life beginning to blossom all around us. This is the perfect time to re-evaluate what you want from your career.
Read our 5 tips to put a ‘spring’ (sorry) in your step!
1. ‘Must haves’
Be really honest with yourself about what you want from your next role. Spend a little time thinking about the direction you want to take. Whilst I completely agree that you need to be flexible and open minded while job hunting, I also find it helpful to have a list of ‘must haves’ in the back of my mind which are non-negotiable. It is a bit like buying a house in that respect – if off street parking is essential, no matter how lovely the house or location, it will begin to grate if you have to walk half a mile to find a parking space. So if work/life balance is what you are ultimately striving for, don’t be tempted by that high salary, intense role as ultimately it won’t bring you happiness.
2. Fresh pair of eyes on your CV
Your CV is a such an important document and is the one and only chance you have to present yourself to a potential recruitment agency or employer. It travels through life with you and it is very easy to become complacent with the contents. This is your one opportunity to sell yourself. Be objective, be critical and don’t assume that the reader will fill in the gaps. Really think about all your achievements and where possible, quantify them.
3. Detail Detail Detail
Don’t rush putting your CV together and be bothered about the small details. Spend time getting the font right, are all the full stops and dashes where they should be etc. Be mindful for the type of roles you will be applying for – have you tailored your CV accordingly.
4. Social Media profiles
Spend a bit of time on your LinkedIn profile. Choose a professional photo and get your profile as up to date and interesting as possible. Everyone will look you up. Make sure all your privacy settings for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc are closed or only have appropriate content that everyone can view.
5. Choose the right agency
Choose the agencies you register with wisely. There as so many recruitment companies in London that it can be rather a daunting and exhausting process. Choose these wisely and make sure you have the energy to be on your best form at each registration. Personal recommendations are the best way to find a good recruitment agency in London. This is exactly how we have built Attic over the past 15 years.
This is an exciting time of year, full of opportunity so good luck with finding your dream job!
